According to the police, on August 4, a woman filed a complaint with the Fazerpura police accusing Thackeray of abducting her minor daughter and raping her.

The police registered a case against Thackeray under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and several other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police officers visited Thackeray’s house in the Wardha district to arrest him but failed to locate him.

Thackeray was arrested while the girl was handed over to her family.

He was produced at the court and the police sought his custody till Aug.20, for questioning in connection to the abduction and rape of a minor.

The man’s death has created a furor in the city. The police have not given an official answer to how Thackeray managed to hang himself in a highly guarded police station.

A source told local media that Thackeray was held in the Rajapeth police station as the Fazepura police station did not have a guarded lockup.

Thackeray’s body was sent to the medical examiner’s office. The exact cause of death is unclear at this time as the autopsy results were being awaited.

The death is being investigated, Senior police officials of the Amaravati police said. The officials at the police station in question will undergo an internal investigation, the official added.
