The third Monday of every January marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day, which is an American federal holiday, celebrates the birthday of the civil rights leader despite not falling on his actual birth date of January 15 on some years.

MLK advocated nonviolent activism in the American civil rights movement. The goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination against African-Americans. In addition, MLK and his supporters pushed to secure legal recognition and federal protection of the citizenship rights enumerated in the Constitution and federal law.

The idea and desire for "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" came after his assassination in 1968. In 1983, U.S. President Ronald Regan signed the holiday into law, with it being observed for the first time 3 years later in 1986. Surprisingly, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed by all 50 states of USA for the very first time in 2000.

To honor and celebrate MLK's inspiring and impactful legacy, we have collected 25 of his most memorable quotes.

  • “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.”
