Tequila Margaritas

Celebrate National Margarita Day on February 22 with unique twists on the traditional sip! These cocktails are highlighting the current trends in the mixology scene. Whether that means mixing multiple spirits together, or playing with brightly colored ingredients, upgrades from the classic recipe are the key to hosting a top-notch fiesta.

From a hibiscus ginger margarita, to a marg made with St-Germain and grapefruit juice, recreating traditional sips is the trend of the season. Mixologists and diferrent tequila brand ambassadors, like Manny Hinojosa and Jeremy Seaver of Tio's Mexican Cafe in Ann Arbor, shared with us their secret recipes to help us celebrate and pay tribute to lime, salt and the agave plant on this special day with these adaptations of the classic margaritas, transforming them just adding different flavored purees, bitters and fresh juices.

  • HIBISCUS GINGER MARGARITA

2 oz. Tequila Cazadores Reposado

¾ oz. Perfect Puree Hibiscus

¾ oz. Perfect Puree Ginger Sour

¾ oz. fresh lime juice

2 dashes of Fee brother grapefruit bitters

Top with splash of Topochico mineral water

DIRECTIONS

In a cocktail shaker combine all the ingredients with ice except Topochico, shake and serve over the rocks. Garnish with lime peel and dash of cinnamon powder.

  • CAZADORES HIGHLAND MARGARITA

2 oz. Tequila Cazadores Reposado

½ oz. St-Germain

½ oz. Agave syrup

3 oz. Fresh grapefruit juice

½ oz. Fresh lime juice

Pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS

In a mixing glass combine all the ingredients with ice, shake and serve over the rocks. Salt optional.

  • BLOOD ORANGE MARGARITA
Blood Orange Margarita

1 ½ oz. Tequila Cazadores Blanco

¾ oz. agave syrup

¾ oz. fresh lime juice

1 oz. perfect puree blood orange

2 dashes grapefruit bitters

Sal de Gusano de Maguey rim

Orange slice garnish

DIRECTIONS

In a mixing glass, add all the ingredients with ice, shake vigorously and serve over the rocks. Garnish with orange slice

  • JALAPENO MARGARITA

1 ½ part Tequila Cazadores Reposado

½ part premium triple sec (Cointreau)

½ part Agave nectar

½ part lime juice

½ part lemon juice

1 slice of jalapeno

DIRECTIONS

Combine all the ingredients, besides jalapeno with ice. Shake with slice of jalapeno and serve over the rocks. Garnish with lime wedge.

  • PUMPKIN MARGARITA

1 ½ oz. Tequila Cazadores Reposado

1 oz. Bols Pumpkin Spice liquor

2 oz. Orange juice

½ oz. lemon juice

Dash of cinnamon powder

DIRECTIONS

In a cocktail shaker combine all the ingredients with ice, shake and serve over the rocks. Cinnamon sugar rim glass and orange peel for garnish.

  • WINTER BLACKBERRY GINGER MARGARITA

1 1/2 oz. Tequila Cazadores Reposado

3/4 oz. Perfect Puree Blackberry

3/4 oz. agave nectar

3/4 oz. Fresh lime juice

1 slice of ginger

Salt rim optional

DIRECTIONS

In a mixing glass muddle slice of ginger add the rest of the ingredients with ice shake vigorously and serve over the rocks. Garnish with lime wheel and fresh blackberry.

  • BLOOD ARROYO

1 1/2 oz. Sombra Mezcal
1 oz. grapefruit juice
1/2 oz. lime juice
1/2 oz. rosemary simple syrup (combine equal parts sugar and water in a sauce pan. Add two sprigs of rosemary and simmer until sugar has dissolved. Allow to chill)
Salt (if desired)

DIRECTIONS

Combine Sombra, grapefruit juice, lime juice and rosemary syrup in a shaker with ice, and shake vigorously. Salt the rim of a rocks glass. Strain cocktail over ice in rocks glass. Garnish with grapefruit wedge and rosemary sprig.

  • STRAWBERRY KIWI MARGARITA

2 oz. Blue Nectar Silver
1 oz. Lime
3/4 oz. Agave
1/4 oz. Strawberry Liqueur
2 muddled strawberries
1/2 kiwi, peeled and muddled

DIRECTIONS

Muddle kiwi and strawberry together and combine all ingredients. Shake and strain, garnish with a strawberry and kiwi slice.

  • BLUE-CUMBER LIME MARGARITA

1 1/2 oz. Blue Nectar Silver
1 inch of cucumber
3/4 oz. Cointreau
1 1/2 oz. lime juice
1 1/2 oz. lime simple syrup

DIRECTIONS

Muddle cucumber with Blue Nectar Tequila. Add remaining ingredients and shake over ice. Strain into rocks glass. Garnish with cucumber slice.

Recipe for lime simple:

2 cups of water, 1.5 cups of sugar, zest of 1 lime

  • FLYING POMEGRANATE MARGARITA

1 1/2 parts Avión Silver

1 3/4 part Pomegranate Juice

3/4 part Orange Liqueur

3/4 part Sour Mix (2:1 Lime/Simple Syrup)

DIRECTIONS

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a lime twist.

  • CHIPOTLE COCOA MARGARITA

3 Slices of Orange

1 Slice of Lemon

1/4 oz. Light Agave

2 oz. Avión Añejo

Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

Chipotle Powder

DIRECTIONS

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a glass that has been rimmed with a mixture of cocoa powder and chipotle powder, and garnish with an orange twist.

  • PINEAPPLE MARGARITA

1.5oz Don Julio Blanco

2oz fresh pineapple juice

1 fresh lime

1 full simple syrup squeeze

4-5 cilantro leaves

Splash of OJ

DIRECTIONS

Mix all ingredients over ice and shake well - make sure to shake well enough to break up all cilantro - pour into glass and serve.

2 oz. Milagro Reposado Tequila

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

¾ oz. Fresh Squeezed Pineapple Juice

½ oz Agave Nectar

Glass: Rocks

DIRECTIONS

Garnish with a pineapple leaf and freshly grated nutmeg. Combine ingredients and shake well.

  • SMOKED PEAR MARGARITA

1.5 oz. Milagro Silver

¾ oz. Montelobos Mezcal

1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

¾ oz. Agave Nectar

½ Fresh Pear Juice (muddle from ripe fruit)

2 Dashes Apple Bitters

Glass: Rocks

DIRECTIONS

Garnish with a dehydrated pear slice and a sprinkle of sea salt. Combine ingredients and shake well.
