NYFW Political Platform: 81 Designers, Celebrities Get Together With 'I Am An Immigrant' Video

Just a month after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, New York Fashion Week addresses political topics.

The recognized "W Magazine" created a campaign with 81 fashion figures to make a statement over Trump's position on immigration. The video features designers like Diane von Furstenberg, models like Doutzen Kroes and Winnie Harlow, photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Mario Sorrenti, and industry activists who are, themselves, immigrants.

The video has them looking directly into the camera and saying "I Am an Immigrant." The magazine's editor, Stefano Tonchi, said the "I Am an Immigrant" video, is a "united and defiant" statement against Trump's travel ban and other immigration policies from the fashion industry.

W Magazine describes the video as a "statement in solidarity with those affected by the refugee ban." They also agree with the fact that the United States would not exist without immigrants.

Magazine designer Dao-Yi Chow, wore a “Make America New York” hat from the previous day’s show. “New Yorkers consider themselves New Yorkers before they do Americans, and it’s because of the diversity; it’s because of the inclusion,” Chow said. “If you work in fashion you have a responsibility for communicating that.”

The video also narrates how model Anja Rubik, who has worked in the United States for more than a decade, became increasingly politically active back in her native Poland, using ground and social media as a platform to protest against the government. “I think fashion is actually not doing enough and not making enough statements,” she tells to W Magazine. “Fashion has the power to actually create trends—not just trends like, ‘What’s in: blue or red?’ but social statements and social trends. So the fashion world should be even more engaged.”

During the recently wrapped fashion week, Prabal Gurung walked models for his finale in t-shirts with phrases like "Yes, We Should All Be Feminists" and "The Future is Female." Designer Jonathan Simkhai also handed out "Feminist AF" t-shirts to his front-row guests.
