After revealing on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” on Wednesday that he attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding to spin tracks, A-list actor and DJ Idris Elba shared how his friendship with the royal prince came to be.

Elba took everyone by surprise when he told Ellen that Prince Harry personally came up to him to ask him to DJ at their wedding. The invitation was too surreal for Elba that he initially took it as a joke.

Harry has long been a fan of the London-born artist, and the two have known each other for quite a while. “Harry and I, we’ve hung out a couple of times through his dad,” Elba told Ellen “His dad’s charity The Prince’s Trust helped me out as a young actor. So I do a lot of work with them, met Harry and Prince William a few times,” he continued.

He also revealed that prior to the invitation, Prince Harry had been to many of the parties he had DJ’d. He recounted how the prince approached him one day saying, “Hey man, what are you doing on the date (May 19)?” When he told the prince he had nothing to do on that day, the prince immediately asked him if he would like to DJ at his wedding. “I was like, ‘Is this a joke? Are you joking?’” said Elba. It turned out, however, that the prince was serious about the invitation.

Elba described the royal wedding as “a beautiful experience, like all weddings are.” Although it has been nearly a year since Prince Harry and Meghan got wed, the actor-DJ still takes absolute pride in his performance at the event, going as far as name dropping it in his feature on Wiley’s new track “Boasty.” In the song, Elba rapped, “…man a big DJ ask Meghan and Harry.”

His gig at the royal wedding wasn’t the last big thing for Elba. This year he is due to perform at Coachella, which is one of the biggest festivals in the world. This year’s event is titled “The Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival” and will bring together some of the biggest artists today, including Ariana Grande, Tame Impala and Childish Gambino.
