Unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who often get away with doing things their own way, Prince William and Kate Middleton are known for being quite traditional, especially when it comes to following royal protocols. As the future monarch, William and Kate are expected to stick to the royal rules.

While planning for their spectacular royal wedding, William and Kate had to follow one certain rule due to their high royal status. However, Queen Elizabeth II stepped in and allowed the couple to break this royal tradition so they could still enjoy their big day.

William and Kate finally tied the knot in April 2011, after almost ten years of dating. For their grand wedding, the couple was required to send invitations to an overwhelming amount of people. “William was presented with a list of hundreds of people who he should invite and felt his heart sink,” royal author Marcia Moody revealed in her book, “Kate: A Biography.”

William and Kate wanted to add personal touches and invite many of their close friends on their special day, despite it being such a huge event with hundreds of people on the guest list. The couple wanted to work around the royal wedding protocol.

Fortunately, since she adores her grandchildren and understands the pressure of being a royal living life in the public eye, the Queen decided to break the rules for William and Kate. She advised the couple to “tear up” the formal guest list for their royal wedding. “He spoke to the Queen and she told him to tear up the list, invite his friends and start from there,” Moody explained.

In the end, William and Kate managed to get the personal touches they wanted for their big day. Meanwhile, as the best man for the wedding, Harry managed to make Kate cry with his best man’s speech. He was even in charge of a special surprise for the couple.

Harry, with the help of Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, transformed the Buckingham Palace Throne Room into a nightclub with disco balls, cocktails and bowls of the couple’s favorite Haribo sweets for a pre-reception party.
