There is a stark difference between how Queen Elizabeth acts when she is around Kate Middleton and how she acts when she is around Meghan Markle. According to a royal expert, the 92-year-old Queen’s body language reflects her different views of the two duchesses, who are noticeably unique in their own ways.

Both Kate and Meghan used to be commoners. When they married into the royal family, they instantly became global icons — in just a snap, everything in their lives became subject to public scrutiny. One thing that particularly interests the public when it comes to their adjustment to royal life is how they deal with Queen Elizabeth. But just when everybody thought only Kate and Meghan fine-tune themselves when they are around the current head of the British monarchy, a royal expert has revealed that even the Queen adjusts when she is around the two duchesses.

According to royal expert Judi James, Queen Elizabeth seems to have more sense of duty and is always poised when she is around the Duchess of Cambridge. This is definitely not how she is when she is around Meghan. Photos of her in royal events with the Duchess of Sussex reveal that she has more sense of fun than duty when she is around Prince Harry’s wife — she isn’t poised but playful and spirited.

Kate and Meghan have both attended separate royal engagements with Queen Elizabeth, and the differences in the Queen’s aura is clear in their photos from these events. Just recently, Kate graced a joint royal engagement with her grandmother-in-law, where they opened a new education facility in London. According to James, Queen Elizabeth looks more formal in her photos with Kate, although small gestures of friendship are still there.

“Kate and Queen sat in the same formal post and they stood in the same formal pose, with hands clasped in front, and for both women it looked perfectly natural despite the differences in age and height,” she explained. James also mentioned the viral photo of the two sharing a blue blanket, pointing out that it’s a “gesture of friendship” between the two.

Meanwhile, James said that the Queen is different when she’s with Meghan. She said that while Kate’s company is all about duty, Meghan’s company is all about having fun. However, there’s a catch. “With Meghan, there are clearly strong signals of affection from the Queen but they have the more look of an indulgent granny with her granddaughter,” she said.
