As the royal family grew and takes heavier responsibilities, Kensington Palace will be divided between the two princes and their families: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. While the division will physically separate the two families, the main office will remain in Kensington Palace.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Prince Harry and his six-month pregnant wife Meghan has decided to move in Frogmore Cottage but are still currently staying in Nottingham Cottage. In preparation for their move, Frogmore is undergoing renovations reportedly worth £3million. They are expected to move after their first born comes out in spring.

The royal family is taking the next step in splitting the royal courts. This is in preparation for Prince Charles’ ascend to the throne. Prince William will soon become Prince of Wales and take a new role in the royalty. Same goes with Prince Harry, who is reported to be taking more political roles. Two houses will be created once the royal split takes place, the House of Cambridge and the House of Sussex with each assigned defined roles, to separate them from each another.

Since Prince William is the heir apparent to the throne, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to be more conservative and compliant with royal duties and protocols. They could become future king and queen consort of England, a more serious role than their current titles.

On the other hand, Prince Harry and Meghan can maintain their freedom-loving ways as they do not really need to adhere much to royal rules. Nevertheless, the sixth in line to the throne will be taking more workload.

The two Houses will also split their staff to manage the affairs of the courts.

Prince William and Prince Harry had been planning the royal court split prior to the latter’s wedding to Meghan. In addition to setting the princes’ responsibilities and roles apart from each other, it is mainly to accommodate the growing family of both royal couples. There were also speculations that it is a way to resolve tension among the princes’ wives. However, the last statement has no credible source.

But this is no longer a new move from the brothers. In 2009, Prince William and Prince Harry created their own households when they left Prince Charles’ court in Clarence House.
