While Russian President Vladimir Putin blames Ukraine for the blast at the crucial Kerch Bridge that connects Russia and Crimea, a British analyst suggests that the culprits may be in his own backyard.

Conflict analyst and former British army officer Tim Cross said in an interview on Times Radio that the explosion may have resulted from a logistics error by Russian forces transporting weapons to other troops.

“At one end of the spectrum, this could have been—I don’t know the answer—but could have been Russians themselves moving explosives, ammunition and weapons across this bridge to put extra resources into the battle around Kherson," Cross said.

“Part of the business of being an ATO is to ensure ammunition is moved safely. It is possible that this was an explosion of Russian military equipment being moved by the Russians. Whatever it was, it was a big bang because you do not bring down a modern bridge like that easily,” he added.

Cross used to work under the British army’s ammunition department as a technical officer and, according to British news outlet Express, his analysis is from his credible expertise when it comes to explosive arms and bomb disposal work.

But for Putin, the blast at the bridge was a "terrorist act" of Ukraine, according to a report by Politico.

“There’s no doubt it was a terrorist act directed at the destruction of the critically important civilian infrastructure of the Russian Federation,” Putin claimed during a meeting with Russia’s Investigative Committee head, Alexander Bastrykin, as quoted by Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

“This was devised, carried out, and ordered by the Ukrainian special services,” the Russian leader added.

Despite Putin's accusations, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility over the explosion which dealt a considerable blow on Moscow's war against Kyiv.

The Kerch Bridge explosion prompted Putin to tighten security around the area and the energy infrastructure between Russia and Crimea.
