Spirit Day began in 2010 when Canadian teenager Brittany McMillian decided to finally take a stand against LGBTQ youth bullying after a string of high profile suicide deaths of gay teens that occurred earlier in the year. After the inception of Spirit Day, GLAAD worked endlessly to promote the day of support and now millions of teachers, schools, students, workplaces, celebrities, casts, and most major media outlets are going purple either via their prominent social media channels or simply by sporting the color purple that day.

The color purple was decided upon due to its symbolism of “Spirit” on the now notable and inspiring Rainbow Flag, which was created by Gilbert Baker and has been used by LGBT groups since the 1970s. GLAAD has now turned Spirit Day into a truly global event and in celebration of that success and support, Latin Times has collected 10 Spirit Day quotes that not only celebrate the LGBT community but promote the love and acceptance that is so necessary.

“I say that homosexuality is not just a form of sex, it’s a form of love, and it deserves our respect for that reason.”— Christopher Hitchens

“Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it’s a good place to start.”— Jason Collins

“Understand that sexuality is as wide as the sea. Understand that your morality is not law. Understand that we are you. Understand that if we decide to have sex whether safe, safer, or unsafe, it is our decision and you have no rights in our lovemaking.”— Derek Jarman

“Marriage should be between a spouse and a spouse, not a gender and a gender.”—Hendrink Hertzberg

“In itself, homosexuality is as limiting as heterosexuality: the ideal should be to be capable of loving a woman or a man; either, a human being, without feeling fear, restraint, or obligation.”— Simone De Beauvoir

“The world is not divided into sheeps and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white. It is a fundamental of taxonomy that nature rarely deals with discrete categories. Only the human mind invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeon-holes. The living world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects. The sooner we learn this concerning sexual behavior the sooner we shall reach a sound understanding of the realities of sex.”— Alfred Kinsey

“Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?”— Ernest Gaines

“The only queer people are those who don’t love anybody.”— Rita Mae Brown

“At least 260 species of animal have been noted exhibiting homosexual behavior but only one species of animal ever, so far as we know, has exhibited homophobic behavior — and that’s the human being.”— Stephen Fry

“Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self.”— Viktor E. Frankl

Bonus quote from Brittany McMillian herself about Spirit Day, “Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person eel a little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own kin to be proud of who they are.”
