Many people were surprised to see “Modern Family” star, Sofía Vergara, attend the Stand Up To Cancer telethon as a cancer survivor herself. Vergara was diagnosed with the disease at the young age of 28 for which she underwent surgery to remove her thyroid. She told reporters at an event back in 2001,"They removed my thyroid and since then I have to use medication. I got rid of the cancer and then for me it was, ‘Oh shoot, now I have to live with this condition my whole life ... I have to be on medication my whole life and I don’t have a thyroid… I go to my doctor religiously and get my blood tests."

Understandably, the cause is dear to the actress’s heart as she participated in the event with boyfriend Joe Manganiello, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Hudson, Katie Couric, Jon Hamm, Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, Robert Downey Jr., Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston among many others. Both, Joel Gallen and Gwyneth Paltrow returned as executive producers of the Stand Up To Cancer telethon telecast which aired last Saturday, September 6 in the US and Canada.

Despite the rumors that singer Ariana Grande was a ‘total nightmare’ to work with, Joel Gallen said not only were the accusations completely false, but "Ariana was wonderful to work with, very gracious and a consummate professional to our team and everyone at the Stand Up to Cancer telecast." Gallen also said, "Her moving performance of ‘My Everything,' which she sang in honor of her grandfather who passed away from cancer, was one of the most emotional moments of the night. We were honored to have her join us."

The first Stand Up To Cancer telethon took place in 2008 and the organization has now raised $369 million to support interdisciplinary scientific research aimed at discovering new treatments for various types of cancer. The 2014 telethon raised $29 million more than the one in 2012.
