Vanessa Hudgens recently opened up for the first time about her past relationship with Zac Efron. During the Awards Chatter podcast this week, the “High School Musical” star revealed that their relationship was not always happy and dandy and that there was a time when their fight almost changed the game for the both of them.

Hudgens revealed that her relationship with Efron started off “really organically” in 2005, and they were not even working on “High School Musical” yet at the time. She recalled meeting Efron during the auditions for the film, saying she felt the chemistry with the actor right off the bat. “We created a bond right from the start,” she said. “We were like, ‘We’re doing this, it’s us or nothing,’” she added.

Although Hudgens and Efron worked together as onscreen- and offscreen partners for years, the actress admitted that there were times when their relationship became problematic for them. She recalled having a fight with Efron one time while attending their rehearsals for “High School Musical,” and it almost got in the way of their roles in the film. Luckily, she was professional enough to not let that happen.

“I remember one time we did have a fight and it was while we were at rehearsals,” Hudgens said. “And I remember Kenny Ortega coming around the corner with the most concerned look on his face like, ‘Oh no, is our movie going to fall apart right now?’” she recalled.

Looking back to that day, Hudgens said she’s proud she chose to be professional. “…So I was like, ‘That aside, we are just going to move forward and do what we need to do and we sorted it all out,’” she said. “I think because I was so young, having that relationship really stabilized me,” she added.

Despite how they ended up, Hudgens admitted that she could not have been more grateful to be in a relationship with Efron at that time. According to her, Efron helped her navigate fame when she was still a newbie in the industry, especially when the instantaneous fame brought by “High School Musical” became too much for her to process.

“It’s just a really weird foreign thing to go through, and by being in a relationship, I feel like it kind of kept me stabilized and grounded, and I had someone to lean on who was going through it as well,” she explained.

Hudgens and Efron broke up in 2010 after being in a five-year relationship. Despite their breakup, the two have reportedly remained good friends. Hudgens is currently in an eight-year relationship with Austin Butler, while Efron has been linked to different women since he and Hudgens called it quits.
