A bus crash in the Mexican state of Veracruz has left 36 people dead and several injured after a fire engulfed the vehicles involved in the crash. The Federal Bridges and Tunnels Commission released a statement at midnight on Sunday morning revealing that the accident occurred at the 134th kilometre (83rd mile) on the Tinaja-Cosoleacaque highway in the state of Veracruz. A five axel truck broke down in the middle of the highway, causing the pile up.

Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexico's president, expressed his remorse on Twitter saying "I send my deepest condolences to the families of those that lost their lives in the highway accident in Veracruz. Elements of the Federal Police are supporting local authorities in giving attention to the accident," wrote the Mexican leader. Meanwhile the country's Secretary of Communication and Transport, Gerardo Ruiz Esparza also lamented the accident: "My deepest condolences to the families of the people who passed away in this accident," wrote the government official.

The statement from the Federal Bridges and Tunnels Commission (Capufe) revealed that "at the moment of the collision, two vehicles were engulfed in flames, resulting in 34 deaths and four injuries that were taken to the Metropolitan Hospital of Acayucan. Capufe regrets deeply the losss of unman lices and reiterates to its users the necessity of taking the necessary precautions when driving on the highways." Support and grief has spread across social media.
