The Hungarian qualifying session was a story of mixed fortunes and, at the tail end of qualifying, mixed weather conditions as well. Nico Rosberg took pole position for the Hungarian GP while a fuel leak caused a catastrophic engine fire for Lewis Hamilton during Q1 of qualifying. Just like that, Nico's strongest rival can no longer threaten his qualifying efforts.

However, Nico Rosberg almost managed to lose his pole in two separate incidents. During the opening minutes of the third session of qualifying, rain at the end of the straight dramatically compromised the track's grip, causing Rosberg to plow past the braking point and onto the grass. Thankfully, Nico managed to save the car at the run-off and gingerly brought it back to the track. Unfortunately, Kevin Magnussen, who followed right behind Rosberg, slammed right into the tire barrier and caused a red flag.

When the rain stopped and Q3 resumed, Red Bull champion Sebastian Vettel made a huge statement by grabbing a provisional pole position. Red Bull believed that if they could deliver a perfect lap, and if Rosberg makes a small error at any of the corners, then there is a chance to take Red Bull's first pole of 2014. However, Nico Rosberg quickly responded to Red Bull's challenge and set a new fastest lap that was nearly half a second quicker than Vettel. Game, set, and match.

Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Jenson Button, Jean-Eric Vergne, Nico Hulkenberg, and Kevin Magnussen complete the Top 10 positions starting on the grid tomorrow.
