Red meat hasn’t been getting very good press lately, after "The World Health Organization," announced that processed meats cause cancer and that red meat probably does, too, placing processed meats in the same category of cancer risk as tobacco smoking and asbestos. Also a report published in 2014 at the Obesity Reviews found that eating red meat is often associated with a higher body mass index, waist circumference, and risk of obesity. For all of these reasons we have created a list of 5 tasty and healthy red meat alternatives for a better lifestyle.

Whole Grains, legumes and beans

Beans are a great way to get protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients. According to PETA, "whole grains are an excellent source of fiber, protein, B vitamins, and zinc." You can replace meat by eating legumes include pinto beans, navy beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, lentils, peanuts, black-eyed and split peas.

While the question still continues as to whether or not eggs are good for you, the source of protein they contain is undeniable. One large egg contains 6 grams of protein and 0.6 mg of iron.

Tofu

Tofu contains 10g of protein and 6.6mg of iron. Eating it regularly helps lower bad cholesterol, alleviates symptoms associated with menopause and even lowers the risk of cancer, it also adds a great source of calcium and vitamin E as well.

Cottage cheese

Low-fat cottage cheese provides plenty of protein, calcium , vitamin B-12, without a lot of fat and calories. According to SF Gate, "each cup of large-curd cottage cheese contains around 23 grams of protein, while an equivalent serving of small-curd cottage cheese contains approximately 25 grams."

Nuts and seeds

Almonds, peanuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds or pumpkin, are a good source of protein and vitamin E. According to La Opinion an ounce of nuts, such as peanuts or sunflower, provides fiber and 3 to 8 grams of protein. You can eat almonds, peanuts, cashews, pecans, hazelnuts, squash seeds, sunflower, sesame and watermelon seed are also benefecial.
