‘Game Of Thrones’ Games: Top 5 Computer And Video Games Based On George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song Of Ice And Fire’ Series

So now that season 3 of "Game of Thrones" is over, and you have finished all the available books in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, what are you supposed to do with your time? Play "Game of Thrones" video and computer games. Duh! You have to stay fresh on your characters in Westeros if you are ever going to be prepared for the start of season 4.

With that in mind we have listed the Top 5 "Game of Thrones" computer and video games that will take your mind off the deep whole that is only filled by watching the Khalessi mother her dragons. Remember though, some games will help, and other may make your forget about the HBO show in general and make you feel like you are a part of the endless game for the Iron Throne.

5. "Game of Thrones: Genesis" (Cyanide, PC, 2011)

This computer game is the oldest "Game of Thrones" game, however it is quite certainly the weirdest. It is solely based on George R.R. Martin's books, and does not include the familiar faces of the HBO series that fans of grown to love. Another strange aspect of this computer game stems from its timeline, the "Genesis" game covers a span of a thousand years, all of it long before the main story. The only benefit is that, if you are a real "Game of Thrones" nerd you will see some of our favorite characters ancestors come to life, you can fight as Aegon the Conqueror or even Nymeria, (no, not Arya's direwolf). According to PC Gamer the only mode that is worth playing is the House to House mode (multiplayer), although to win in this mode you must raise prestige. And to raise prestige you have to gather it in some odd ways, "not having your bastard children revealed, not being humiliated by betrayal, or even by killing the most people." iDigital Times says "if you don't like difficult and confusing RTS games, give "Game of Thrones: Genesis" a pass."

4. "Game of Thrones" (Cyanide; PS3, Xbox 360, PC; 2012)

"Game of Thrones" the game is a role-playing game based on both the books and the HBO series, which I personally enjoy. This game also includes some of the original voice cast, which certainly makes you feel back at home in Westeros while playing. Players advance through the game in chapters and can play as two characters, a skinchanger from the Night's Watch, and a red priest of R'hllor. The thing that I most enjoy about this game is the expansive of the scenery the player experiences while advancing, it also has an increasingly more entertaining story line. It is certainly worth a play, if you are a fan of the series.

3. "Game of Thrones: Ascent" (Disruptor Beam, Facebook, 2013)

Yes, "Game of Thrones: Ascent" is a Facebook game which launched in beta in February of 2013, and while I understand it is a social media game, it really is a great "Game of Thrones" game. Players can create their own characters, (cool), and then use their power to become an important player in the "game of Thrones" and align themselves with one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The game is story-focused and allows players to train troops, trade goods, develop their lands and take part in political intrigue, aka backstabbing. But beware, this Facebook-game is still in beta so playing is slow and there is a lot of waiting, but these problems may be fixed.

2. "A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)" (Fantasy Flight Games, Board Game, 2011)

Really throwing it back here, with a board game, but a game is a game, and this happens to be awesome. I have a really hard time controlling myself when I play this board game, I have a tendency to get carried away and take it really personal when someone makes a move against my house. But anyway, I'm just bitter. 3-6 players play the game, which is based solely on the books, and control the Great Houses of Westeros. If I have to list the Great Houses, you shouldn't be allowed to play. The way you win the Iron Throne, is through your use of influence in Court, your military strategy and an uncanny ability to actually stay alive. This game is old, it came out in 2003, but totally fun.

1. "Crusader Kings II: A Game of Thrones" (Paradox / Fanmade, PC & Mac, 2012-2013)

I know what you are thinking, it’s not even out yet?! No, it’s not, but it’s going to be worth the wait! In actuality this is not a game, it’s a mod. A mod for the game Crusader Kings II, which is described as “a game of medieval dynasty management, politicking, marriage, and warfare.” This fan created mod takes all of this awesomeness right to the heart of “Game of Thrones”: WESTEROS! Players get to play as the head of the Great Houses, and you control the family. So for example, you wish to play as Lord Eddard Stark, when you die and you will, you will play as your heir, Robb Stark, so choose wisely because your heir means a lot. There is some much to do in this game, and you can also play during many different time periods. So pretty much, it’s awesome!
