Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This date was chosen because on Sept. 15 is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
This year, many stores and brands in the U.S. have recognized the work and contributions of Latinos in America, and Macy’s was one of them. In celebration of the Hispanic Heritage Month, this department store has honored Mexican singer Thalía and named her an “Icon Of Style” and an influential Latina in the U.S. “Macy’s recognizes and values the deep heritage and influence Latinos have contributed to our nation not only in fashion, but music, food, and every aspect of culture,” said Dineen Garcia, Macy’s vice-president of Diversity Strategies.
“As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Macy’s is proud to commemorate those contributions with great special events in stores nationwide while also honoring our two Icons of Style - influencer, style maker and music superstar Thalia and animated heroine Dora the Explorer,” Garcia added.
The 42-year-old singer was more than thrilled for such an honor, and she expressed her gratitude. “I am so honored Macy’s has chosen me as an Icon of Style for 2013. To be recognized as a Latina Icon of Style means a lot to me and am grateful to Macy’s for all they do to promote Hispanic Heritage. I am proud of my culture and think it comes through in everything I do – my passion for my family, my music, my writing and my personal style. I hope to always inspire and to be a positive Latina influence for others.”
Thalía, who accepted her recognition at the Herald Square location in New York, took a moment to express her solidarity towards the victims of Tropical Storm Manuel in Mexico and called people to help in any way possible. “We need to get together for those who need us right now and help however we can with a donation.”
Macy's Hispanic Heritage events will take place at stores across the country including Santa Ana, New York City, Jersey City, Chicago, Miami, El Paso, West Covina, Glendale, Santa Clara, Bellevue, Gurnee, Atlanta, McAllen and Roseville. Customers who join the celebration will have the opportunity to take a look Inside Thalía's Closet, where fans will be able to explore Thalía's influence in music and fashion with a look at her most coveted red carpet looks and her own personal style,
and/or meet Dora the Explorer.
