The most expensive transfer in Mexican history was completed over the weekend when Mexico’s World Cup and Olympic sensation, Raúl Jiménez signed with Atletico Madrid.

Liga MX’s Club America, tweeted: “Raúl Jiménez is an Atlético Madrid player, extend your wings and fly high.”

Jiménez made his Liga MX debut just a few years ago in October of 2011. Since that time he has gone on to become one of the biggest stars in the league. Jiménez’s departure is bittersweet for Mexico. On the one hand, they are losing one of their league’s best players, but on the other, another Mexican star is off to greener pastures where he can showcase his talent on a larger scale.

El Tri fans will have Jiménez on the national team for many years to come, but thus far in his career with Mexico Jiménez has shined. He was on the 2012 London Olympic gold medal team that shocked Brazil and he was a substitute during the 2014 World Cup.

Jiménez was extremely vital in El Tri’s run to the World Cup as he is most known for his sensational bicycle kick goal against Panama in the must-win World Cup qualifying matches.

The move to last year’s Spanish La Liga champions, Atlético Madrid has to be one that pleases Jiménez as he has been linked to transfers with many teams all summer including Porto, and Wolfsburg. Atletico is a much bigger team in a much bigger league and he should be successful at his new club.

"They're a team that have been growing, that have been doing everything right recently. If they sign me, that's great, I'll have to give them my best, keep pushing my limits, keep making history in my career", said Jiménez

The 23-year old striker leaves Liga MX as the second current leading scorer with four goals. Having scored a hat trick against Pumas and a goal against Tijuana, Jiménez leaves the Apertura on the young season as the current golden boot leader. Jiménez becomes just the third Mexican player to ever play for Atletico Madrid, following his predecessors, Hugo Sánchez and Luis García who all wore the colors of Los Colchoneros. Atlético released a statement that read:

"Raúl Jiménez is a player with enormous promise and will complete our offensive line,"director José Luis Pérez Caminero said. "He has a lot of desire to succeed in his leap to European football and his hope is that he will adapt quickly to our league."

Jiménez was transferred for an estimated $14 million making him the most expensive transfer in the history of Mexican soccer.
