One of the most impressive winning streaks in the world is on the line on Tuesday in the World Cup Semifinal match between Brazil and Germany. In unprecedented fashion, Brazil has not lost a competitive match on home soil in almost 40 years.

The last time Brazil lost was on September 30, 1975 to Peru. In that game, Brazil was well on its way to a 1-1 draw when stunningly; Peru scored two goals in the final eight minutes to beat Selecao 3-1. Since that day, Brazil has gone an impressive 45-0.

To put that into comparison, the next most impressive home winning streak that we could find was 129 games over the span of 12 years by the NCAA Men’s Basketball team Kentucky. Although Kentucky played twice as many games as Brazil, Selecao’s winning streak spans over triple the amount of years.

Historians say that the Brazil team that lost on that day in 1975 was a team in transition, and that the current crop of Brazil stars is a much better squad. Unfortunately for Brazil, one of those stars, arguably their biggest star, Neymar will not be with the team on Tuesday after fracturing a vertebra in his back in their 2-1 victory over Colombia.

Germany however poses the toughest challenge that Brazil has faced in their record 39 year unbeaten streak. The three-time World Cup Champions beat Brazil 3-2 the last time they met in August of 2011 and have looked incredible defensively throughout this year’s tournament.

Las Vegas is backing Brazil on this match, but they too believe that Germany has a strong chance to end the formidable Brazilian home winning streak. Currently, Bovada.lv has the match as a “Pick Em’” with Brazil the slight favorite as far as payouts are concerned.

The match is set to kick-off at 4:00PM EST on Tuesday at Estaadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, where ironically as fate would have it is the exact same venue that Brazil lost to Peru in 1975.

Only time will tell if this improbable winning steak will bookend in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday. Germany will certainly to need find a way to eradicate an emotional Brazilian team who with a flair for the dramatics, have somehow found a way to defeat every opponent in the tournament thus far.
