Cameroonian soccer player Albert Ebosse was killed on Saturday in Tizi Ouzo, Algeria by a fan who threw a rock after the team lost. Ebosse was 24 years old and the leading scorer in the Algerian soccer league last season. According to witnesses at the match, a fan threw what appeared to be a large piece of concrete that struck Ebosse in the head.

Ebosse played for JS Kabylie and had scored the only goal of his team’s 2-1 defeat to USM Algier. After the final whistle had blown, and the players had congratulated each other, the teams walked towards the locker rooms. The home crowd was angry that their team lost the match and multiple fans began throwing objects at the players. Ebosse was hit in the head and collapsed to the ground and immediately rushed to the hospital which conveniently was less than 500 years way, but “succumbed to a head injury” according to a statement by the team.

Ebosse’s death now casts a dark cloud over a country that just two months ago relished in their team’s performance at the World Cup. Algeria made it to the round of 16 in Brazil and almost defeated eventual champions Germany 2-1. However, after the violent and shocking death of Ebosse, the tragedy will all but extinguish any of those memories.

The president of the Algerian soccer league attended the game, but left before the incident, he had this to say after learning of the tragedy:

“I am still finding this tragic death hard to grasp because I was at the stadium just minutes before this tragic incident and Albert Ebosse was still running in all senses of the word before my eyes.” President Mahfoud Kerbadj said.

Ebosse who was born in Cameroon and became a star in Cameroon’s soccer league, just recently started to play in the Algerian league. Before that he had played in Malaysia and dreamed of one day playing in Europe like his hero, Samuel Eto’o, arguably the most famous soccer player in Africa next to Didgier Drogba. President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou, who like Ebosse is also from Cameroon, released a statement after hearing of the killing:

“My thoughts go out to the family and friends of this young man who enjoyed his job peacefully and went further to pursue his passion for football abroad,” said Hayatou

“African football cannot be the breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever. We expect exemplary sanctions to be taken against this grave act of violence. Violence has no place in African football in particular and sports in general. We remain resolute and state in the strongest terms our determination to eradicate all forms of violence and unsportsmanlike conduct in stadiums on the continent.”

Algeria’s interior ministry has ordered a police investigation into Ebosse’s death and hopefully the shameful perpetrators will be brought to justice. In the meantime, Ebosse’s body was sent to a military hospital where it will be flown home to Cameroon to his family.
