Before President Obama’s historic announcement about an overhaul in the diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US, Republican Senator Marco Rubio, had called it “absurd” in an interview for Fox News: "It's absurd and it's part of a long record of coddling dictators and tyrants that this administration has established," Rubio explained. The Congress is deeply divided in the matter and while some aspects of the fresh new diplomatic policy, will be put into effect immediately, others need Congressional approval, and government officials such as Rubio himself have stated they will “make every effort” possible to block the plan.

The Florida Republican, who is in fact Cuban-American, said is his strongly considering to use his role as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Western Hemisphere subcommittee to stop all moves by President Barack Obama toward normalizing relations with the government of Cuba. “The president’s decision to reward the Castro regime and begin the path toward the normalization of relations with Cuba is inexplicable,” Rubio stated, while, as Dana Milbank from the Washington Post said, “struggling to contain his fury.” When asked how Senator Rubio knew so confidently the Cuba overhaul would be disastrous, he responded: “Because I know the Cuban regime and its true nature better than this president does or anybody in his administration does.”

Additionally, Rubio had a few things to say about President Obama, amongst which he called him “willfully ignorant” and “the worst negotiator” before saying how the president let the people of Cuba down by closing a “disgraceful” deal that will only result in human rights and freedom setbacks.
