George Zimmerman tried to auction the gun he used to take Treyvon Martin’s life to “raise funds,” sources revealed on Thursday.

According to various news outlets, Zimmerman did not deny the story and added that he was trying to raise funds to fight Hillary Clinton’s anti-firearm rhetoric.

On Wednesday, CNN reported Zimmerman had posted an ad on GunBroker, a firearm-auctioning website.

“I am honored and humbled to announce the sale of an American firearm icon. The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin on 2/26/2012,” read the post.

Bidding was set to begin on Thursday morning but as soon as the news broke, the website decided to cancel the auction and take the item down.

During an interview with WOFL-TV Orlando, Zimmerman disclosed he wanted to sell the weapon in order to move past this situation.

“I recently received it back from the Department of Justice,” he mentioned. “They took it after my trial, after I was exonerated.”

He continued, “What I’ve decided to do is not cower. I’m a free American. I can do what I want with my possessions.”

Earlier today, Martin’s family expressed their feelings about the situation in a statement that also pointed out the lack of commitment current candidates have on ending gun violence in the U.S.

“This election season, we are less focused on furthering that mission,” they wrote. “As such, the foundation has no comment on the actions of that person.”

In July 2013, Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of Trayvon Martin. The then 29-year-old man was accused of second-degree murder for shooting the 17-year-old boy on February 26, 2012 in Sanford, Florida. The case quickly got racial overtones when Sanford law enforcement declined to arrest Zimmerman.
