"Gotham" premieres Monday, Sept. 22, at 9/7 c. Fox

The highly anticipated "Gotham" premieres Monday, Sept. 22, at 8 p.m. eastern, 7 p.m. central, on Fox. Fans of the Batman comics will get to see Gotham City come alive as actor Benjamin McKenzi plays detective James Gordon of the Gotham Police Department. Donal Logue will play Gordon's partner Harvey Bullock.

The new "Gotham" TV series is the origin story of DC's popular Batman comic. The TV show will take place at a time before Batman exists. Fans will see Detective Gordon and Bullock take on criminals including Selina Kyle, Oswalk Cobblepot, and more.

Gordon's investigation of the tragic murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne of Gotham City's affluent Wayne Family will be a major plot point in the TV series as well. Son Bruce Wayne will be played by David Mazouz. In "Gotham," a young Bruce Wayne will befriend James Gordon and eventually become the greatest detective Gotham has ever seen.

The sypnosis for the pilot episode of "Gotham" was recently released by Fox: "Rookie detective James Gordon battles villains and corruption in the premiere of this action-adventure series set in pre-Batman Gotham City."

The second episode is titled "Selina Kyle." According to the synopsis, "Detectives Gordon and Bullock investigate a child trafficking ring preying on Gotham's street kids, including Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova). Meanwhile, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) resurfaces in the countryside and begins to make his way back to Gotham."
