Holiday Hangover

The holidays are a time of joy and holiday spirit. However, they can also be a time of stress, with lots of parties to organize and attend, cooking, buying presents, putting up with family members you don't get along with. And even if everything goes peachy and you are just filled with holiday spirit, what happens after?

There is that period between Christmas and New Years where the festivities are over and you are back at work. So, to get you through the holiday blues, here are 6 tips to survive the post holiday’s hangover.

  1. Exercise. Between all the Christmas dinners and lunches you might be feeling a little bloated - there is nothing worse than mash potato regret! You will also be looking towards your New Years resolution and for many of us this involves wanting to exercise more. Starting to exercise early can help you ease into your goal, rather than trying to jump in all at once in the New Year. Plus exercise releases endorphins, wards off stress and anxiety and can also improve self-esteem. So get to a gym or just go for a nice walk!
  2. Be grateful. Thanksgiving is traditionally the time when we stop to give thanks for what we have. Yet the Christmas spirit can often get lost in all the buying of presents and celebrations, the disappointments of what you didn't get and troubles with family. So stop for a moment and give thanks for what you do have. Maybe send a thank you note or two to someone who gave you a great present or hosted a great party. Nothing will cheer you up like gratitude.
  3. Detox. Christmas is a time of eating and drinking - often to great excess! And with New Years celebrations around the corner, your body is going to need some respite. So why not take this time to cleanse your body and feel rejuvenated. There is nothing quite like a healthy body for a healthy happy mind. It will be a great way to start the New Year. Try a juice cleanse, cut out carbs for a week - feel good about you!
  4. Make plans for the future. Christmas is something many of us look forward to all year, so inevitably when it's over you can be left feeling a bit glum. So give yourself something to look forward to. Start making your plans for New Years Eve. Create a resolution that you are excited about. Plan a weekend away. Give yourself a light at the end of the tunnel!
  5. Give yourself a present. Christmas is the time for giving: you've spent weeks worrying about getting the perfect gift for someone. And sometimes you don't really get the perfect gift yourself. So why not treat yourself to something. Maybe it’s a day at the spa. Maybe the gadget you really wanted but no one gave you. Get yourself something and don't feel guilty about it - you've spent the last month giving!
  6. Hang out with your friends. Family is important and always will be. But as we grow older, friends become more and more like family. So spend some time with the people that are really important to your life now. Share stories about those awkward family Christmas moments, talk about your plans for New Year's Eve and the New Year. Surround yourself with the people that make you feel good about you.
