With the January transfer period approaching, multiple teams across the international landscape of soccer have begun exploration into which players they’d like to target during the active window. The previous summer transfer period saw high-profile players in Mesut Ozil and Gareth Bale latch on with new clubs and being that injuries, suspensions and demotions impact many teams on a season-by-season basis, the January window serves as a time where clubs in the running for titles can improve upon the current roster.

Head coach David Moyes and Manchester United are expected to research players at the midfield position during the winter transfer stage, but recent reports indicate that a major move could take place during the next summer window, a move that will certainly impact the Red Devils. According to Mirror Football, Spanish Primera Division giants Real Madrid are highly interested in bringing current Man U forward Wayne Rooney on board. Los Blancos reeled in former Old Trafford star Cristiano Ronaldo four seasons ago and because of the fact that Rooney’s contact runs out in 2015, Real Madrid could elect to make a play for the 28-year-old even sooner.

Los Blancos want Wayne Rooney to stall on any negotiations between himself and Manchester United, with Real Madrid also ready to table an offer of £20million. The deal could become a reality if United elects to sell Rooney during the summer period to avoid losing him and getting nothing in return once his current contract expires in 18 months. Madrid President Florentino Perez has been a major supporter of Wayne Rooney over the years and because funds won’t be an issue for the La Liga superpower, a move from England to Spain surely sits as a possibility for Rooney.

Currently sitting seventh in the Barclays Premier League one season after winning the title, Wayne Rooney remains confident in the Red Devils’ ability to compete, recently noting that his team is returning to form while putting the sluggish opening behind them.

“I think we had some poor results at the start of the season but we are starting to show some real quality,” he said following a come-from-behind victory at Hull City. “In the last few weeks we are having a go. We are working hard, we are fighting for each other and we are ready for the challenge. Hopefully, we can surprise a few people.”

In 16 Premier League contests this season, Rooney has notched 9 goals while dishing out 9 assists.
