KANSAS CITY – Eduardo Herrera opened the match with a quick goal and El Tri relied on their stellar defense from there as Mexico continued their hot start to 2015 with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Tuesday.

Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera inserted 10 new players in his starting XI from the team that defeat Ecuador in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Mexico dominated most of the match offensively, attempting 17 total shots with seven of them on target.

Herrera made his Mexican national team debut and might be the fastest player to score in their debut in Mexican history. Herrera scored on his first ever touch for El Tri when he received a cross from Juan Carlos Medina in the third minute and easily found the top right corner of the net for the game’s only goal.

Justo Villar was in net for Paraguay and was tremendous with 11 saves. Without Villar, Mexico could have been up by three or four goals by halftime.

Edgar Meliton Hernandez made a surprise start in net for Mexico as most people expected World Cup hero Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa after Jose Corona got the start last Saturday against Ecuador. Ochoa left the team on Monday to join his wife who was giving birth to the couple’s new child.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez did not start for El Tri, but replaced the hero of the match, Herrera in the 59th minute. Giovani Dos Santos replaced Raul Jimenez in the 78th minute.

Mexico next clashes with the United States in San Antonio on April 15th in what is sure to be a very heated and emotional match.

Game Notes:
Miguel Layun and Hector Herrera missed the match for Mexico as they returned to their respective clubs in Europe.
