Netflix has officially announced the expansion of their current multi-year deal with DreamWorks Animation, which makes the streaming service the global home to a number of new original series.

Among those new series will be Guillermo del Toro's children's novel "Trollhunters," which revolves around the "fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown."

Back in 2010 del Toro was set to release a "Trollhunters" project, but at the time it was set to be a film. Del Toro talked to The Hollywood Reporter where he discussed what kind of themes "Trollhunters" would deal with and why he wanted to develop the story for the small screen. Del Toro said:

"I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid. Normally, kids are idealized in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it’s thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff."

This will be del Toro's second book adapted into a television series, as he is co-author and co-creator of FX's apocalyptic vampire drama "The Strain," reports Den of Geek.
