Watch this naturally aspirated Porsche 911 GT3 RS tear the Nurburgring! Bridge To Gantry / YouTube

Earlier this year, rumors suggested that the 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS would be lighter, faster, and boast 50 percent more downforce than its 997 predecessor. What's more, reports as far back as February claimed that the GT3 RS will produce no less than 500 horsepower and may even be turbocharged. Finally, one of the first Porsche 911 GT3 RS spy videos have leaked and we get to see what's what.

Porsche engineers have recently been caught testing the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and putting it through its paces at the Nurburgring. By the sound of it, rumors of a turbocharged Porsche 911 GT3 RS are just that: rumors. Purists rejoice!

There's a notable difference in the intake noise that are produced by the 911 Turbos, particularly a deeper and slightly more muted tone. Given the audio clip from the spy video, the GT3 RS prototype is sporting a naturally aspirated power unit as well as a PDK gearbox. Past reports claimed that the 911 GT3 RS could also be available with a manual gearbox. Unfortunately, we have yet to see any evidence to support this claim. Keep those fingers crossed!

Assuming that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS will accomplish over 500 horsepower from a naturally aspirated engine, we will have to assume that the GT3 RS will not share the same 3.8-liter flat-six engine as the standard GT3, as the specific output limit peaks at 475 horsepower. The likely solution is to bring back the power unit used in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, which as the name suggests, bumps the displacement to a rounded 4.0-liter.

Stay tuned as we learn more details regarding what exactly is motivating the latest track-ready 911. Check out the spy video of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the Nurburgring below:
