Sweden's Princess Madeleine has announced via the Swedish palace that she is expecting her first child with her newly wed husband Christopher O'Neill. The royal couple married only 12 weeks ago, the story made global headlines as most royal weddings do. This one was particularly interesting to royal watchers in the US because the groom was an investment banker from New York. Princess Madeleine is the younger sister of the crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and third in line to the throne. The Swedish princess lives with her new husband in New York City working at the non-profit group founded by her mother, World Childhood Foundation.

The website of the Swedish Royal Court made the official announcement today. The statement said, "Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O'Neill are delighted to announce that The Princess is expecting their first child. The birth is expected to take place in beginning of March of 2014. No changes to the schedule of The Princess's engagements and work for Childhood are planned during the fall of 2013." Princess Madeleine moved from her home country to the United States when her first engagement to Jonas Bergstrom ended. Rumors were swirling that the Swedish attorney had cheated on the princess and that is what is said to have ended the relationship.

The monarchy in Sweden is similar to the British monarchy in that it is a constitutional reign. This means that the King and or Queen is largely a figure head with limited governmental power. The current head of state in Sweden is King Carl XVI. The king will be succeeded by Princess Madeleine's eldest sister Victoria, who will one day be Queen of Sweden. The Swedish royal couple first met in NYC in 2011. Rumor began to swell about a possible relationship when the pair were spotted together in Central Park.
