Colin Farrell, Brad Pitt, and Michael Fassbender are rumored to join True Detective Season 2. HBO

Reports from last week announced that actor Christian Bale had turned down the lead role for "True Detective" Season 2. Now, the latest rumors suggest that Colin Farrell is tapped to star as one of the three main characters in the new season. HBO has not made any comments regarding the casting rumors, but the new characters will replace the awesome performance of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The "True Detective" Season 2 release date is slated to be in early 2015.

According to Film Divider, Colin Farrell's character is faced with cocaine addiction and difficulty with anger management. Colin Farrell's character will be joined by a younger California Highway Patrol officer that was suspended for sexually exploiting a young woman he pulled over. Finally, the third protagonist is the Monterey Sheriff, who will be a woman in her 30's. In "True Detective," nobody is clean. The female sheriff faces issues with alcohol and gambling. According to "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto, Colin Farrell will be joined by a partner, an older detective, although he is not a central role in the new season.

Next, "Friday Night Lights" actor Taylor Kitsch is rumored to play the role of the suspended California Highway Patrol officer. However, the actress to play the role of the Monterey Sheriff is still up in the air. According to Breathecast, Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Fassbender, are some of the actors that are allegedly in talks with the HBO series.

"Brad's name has come up many times, it's just a matter of what his other commitments are," said an unidentified source to Hollywood Life a few months ago. "It's the show everyone wants to be on, because the writing and the roles are just so exquisite and complex. Brad has tight relations with HBO - he teamed up with Ryan Murphy last year to produce the HBO movie The Normal Heart. I know everyone would be thrilled to have him onboard."

Just like in Season 1, "True Detective" Season 2 will begin with a murder. The body of a fictional character named Ray Caspar, a City Manager of a Californian City, was discovered. Eventually, the story will unravel to reveal the murder as just the surface of very dangerous corruption involving California's transportation systems. The Season 2 plot will mainly revolve around profitable land ownership and lucrative federal grants corruption schemes as a high-speed railroad is being built to link North and South California.
