“Dos a cero!” The most famous words of in the United States vs. Mexico rivalry came to pass on Wednesday when the USMNT defeated El Tri 2-0 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

American fans in attendance of the sold out friendly between the two countries chanted the famous score (two to zero) throughout the final twenty minutes of the game after substitute Juan Agudelo scored team USA’s second goal in the 72nd minute.

Stanford sophomore, Jordan Morris, scored the game’s first goal in the opening minutes of the second half when the 20-year-old found himself in the right place at the right time for the Stars and Stripes. Morris got a fortunate bounce inside the penalty box and was easily able to sneak it past Mexican keeper Cirilo Saucedo for the goal.

Morris was making his first start for the national team and was impressive in his 65 minutes on the pitch. He was substituted for Agudelo who scored a masterful goal from outside the box. Mexican defender, George Corral, slipped on the play as many fans in attendance and on social media commented on the poor playing conditions throughout the game.

The less-than-ideal playing surface was definitely a topic of conversation before, during and after the match. Rumors that the game would not be played because of the surface were rampant leading up to yesterday, and it was evident why as the poor surface led to footing and possession problems throughout the game.

Miguel Herrera’s men looked like the better team for most of the first half, but the teams went into the locker room scoreless after 45 minutes. Midfielder Luis Montes had several opportunities for El Tri, but his best chance late in the game was denied by Real Salt Lake keeper, Nick Rimando.

Many new faces were fused with veterans on the pitch for team USA. With just a couple months remaining before the Gold Cup and Copa America, USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann started newcomers Morris and Ventura Alvarado alongside veterans like Omar Gonzalez, Michael Bradley and Kyle Beckerman.

The match was a potential preview of this summer’s Gold Cup and continues Klinsmann’s undefeated stretch against his south of the border rivals. Klinsmann is now 3-0-3 in six matches against Mexico.
