Last night, the UConn Huskies became NCAA champions. The Huskies beat the Kentucky Wildcats in North Texas. Shabazz Napier, UConn’s star point guard won Most Outstanding Player as he finished the night with 22 points. As we know, he his half Puerto Rican because of his mother Carmen Velazquez. He has been the leader of the team and one of the main reasons the Huskies had such a successful season. Before last night’s championship game he said, “It is an honor to be able to represent my university, my people and also Puerto Rico, my family’s home.”

Napier practiced with the Puerto Rican National Team two years ago, but an injury kept from being included on the team that played in the Centro basket in Puerto Rico and the in the Olympic qualifiers played in Venezuela. Last Saturday, 22 year old Shabazz, commented that he would feel motivated and excited to be considered to play for and represent Puerto Rico. He said, “I would love to go and experience that. It would be something very special and it would definitely help my game for the goals I have set for myself. Everything I am as a player I owe to my school. And as a person, my mother’s education, she would be proud if I played for Puerto Rico.”
