While the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia quickly approach, participating athletes across the globe continue to make their final preparations ahead of their participation on the world's biggest stage. Despite the fanfare and constant spotlight surrounding the upcoming games, the host city of Sochi remains a questionable landing spot due to the rising concerns around security. Set to begin on Feb. 7, the Winter Games serve as an opportunity for fans to take in some of the best events in the world while also serving as a great chance for athletes to build their individual brands with strong performances.

The games may be approaching but added controversy comes this week from Sochi mayor Anatoly Pakhomov, who said that he doesn't believe gay people reside in his city. In an interview with BBC, the Russian boss indicated that all are welcome at the winter games but did say that gay people do not live in his city. “Our hospitality will be extended to everyone who respects the laws of the Russian Federation and doesn't impose their habits on others,” Pakhomov said. “It's not an accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city.”

Russia's gay "propaganda" law has started an uproar outside the country and Russian President Vladimir Putin -- who continues to defend the law -- said recently that the item was designed to protect children, even if it is viewed as a controversial stand. “It seems to me that the law we have adopted does not hurt anyone,” Putin said. “Moreover, individuals of non-traditional orientation cannot feel like second-rate humans in this country because they are not discriminated against in any way. I couldn't care less about their sexual orientation. We will welcome all athletes and all visitors to the Olympics. None of our guests will have any problems.”
