It comes as a surprise that the Duchess of Sussex is still not a British citizen. But wait, before you think it's because of the royal family drama, here's the real reason why Meghan Markle still isn't British.

Becoming a citizen of any country is never a piece of cake and to become a British citizen, there are several ways through which one can apply. If someone enters the country as the fiancé of a British citizen, the couple must then marry within six months - which the Sussexes did by tying the knot in May 2018.

It's also been stated that for a foreigner to become the citizen of the country as the spouse of a British citizen while on a family visa, an extensive range of proof becomes eminent to prove that the relationship is real. Thus, the couple must submit phone and email conversations, flight tickets, photos, and more.

After a spouse completes three years, they can then apply for citizenship, provided they are willing to settle in the country, and have a settled status under the EU settlement scheme or can produce a permanent residence document.

Once all the documents have been submitted, the spouse must take a test on life in the UK, and it costs £50. The candidates must have a strong hold on English, Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic. Their character analysis is also conducted.

During the three years of the stay, the person applying for citizenship must now have spent more than 270 days outside the country. However, this process can be avoided if one's partner works for the government or an organization associated with them. Here, the charges are £1,330 and the Duchess can easily apply.

According to DailyMail, a friend of the Duchess said, "Meghan is not yet a British citizen. It might seem extraordinary, given that she's been married to the Queen's grandson for 18 months, but she accepts that it's a slow process." It's also been reported that Meghan is willing to undergo the process like any other individual, hence, her citizenship may be granted in the following year or two.
