First unveiled during the 2012 New York International Auto Show, the completely re-designed 2013 Toyota Avalon will feature the model's first Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.

Already announced for the latest 2013 Avalon-based Lexus ES30h hybrid, a hybrid drive for the Avalon comes as no surprise.

Featuring an identical 2.5 liter V6 and hybrid drive to the ES, the Avalon packs a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery and a pair of electric motor/generators within the transaxle. With a combined performance figure of 200-hp, the Avalon Hybrid is expected to accelerate from 0-to-60 mph in 8.2 seconds.

Clearly establishing that the Avalon is by no means a vehicle for spirited driving enthusiasts, the Toyota Avalon hybrid also boasts pure electric drive of up to a mile when traveling under 25 mph. Expect the Toyota Avalon Hybrid to average 39 mpg highway and 40 mpg city.

Although pricing has yet to be confirmed, we believe the new full-size hybrid should fall near $37,500.

Beyond the hybrid drivetrain, the 2013 Avalon will also offer the proven 3.5-liter, DOHC V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic. The all-aluminum V6 engine is expected to produce 268-hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque., good for a 0-to-60 time of just under 6 seconds, a significant improvement in performance over the hybrid drive. Likewise, the new V6 promises improved fuel economy, performance, quietness, response, and drivability over its predecessor.
