A lot of us believe that eggs are not the healthiest breakfast choice. We tend to go for what we believe are better options for our first meal of the day such as, fruit and yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, granola bars, etc. As we get older, we start to worry about artery clogging, cholesterol, heart disease, and other medical issues caused by fatty foods.

Eggs can often be put into this category, but the truth it that eggs bring important elements to a well-balanced diet like: important vitamins, healthy fats, trace minerals, and other nutrients. Many health experts call them the perfect food. AND there’s only 72 calories per egg!

Here are 7 reasons to include eggs in your diet:

1) Instant Mood Boost: Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamins B, and iodide contained in eggs work together to battle fatigue.

2) Nourish Your Muscular System: Eggs are one of the best protein sources. The B12 in eggs helps with muscle contraction.

3) Guard Against Cancer: Choline, included in eggs, decreases chances of getting breast cancer.

4) Feed Your Brain: Choline in eggs can also help you to keep your memory sharp while increasing the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps your brain store and recall information better.

5) Save Your Sight: Eggs are a rich source of antioxidants that help ward off macular degeneration and cataracts.

6) Stop Extinction: You can help preserve old-school chicken breeds based on the eggs you choose to eat. Go to LocalHarvest.org to find farmers in your area.

7) Slim Down: Researches from Louisiana University found that when obese people had eggs for breakfast instead of bagels at least five times a week, they lost 65% more weight. Saint Louis University scientists discovered that eating eggs in the morning led to eating fewer calories throughout the rest of the day.

Remember that most of these nutrients are included in the yolk! Egg whites are not always your best bet.
