Mexican Actor Daniel Giménez Cacho makes directorial debut in “Crónica de Castas,”which will air on NBC Universo Sunday April 19 at 10pm ET/PT.
The series takes place in “Barrio Bravo” and tells the story of Yolanda, a Spanish hotel owner with a dark past, her son Raúl who is trying to find out his father’s real identity, and Lucía, a high society girl who falls in love with Raúl and moves in with him to the “barrio.” Other characters with different social statuses, and plots involving racism, bigotry, and other social issues, collide as the story progresses.
The show was filmed in the symbolic neighborhood of Tepito in Mexico City, which proved to be an incredible, yet challenging experience for Giménez Cacho. They took a year and a half to get familiar with the place and get people’s trust. Usually, people who live in Tepito fear that productions will reflect a bad image of the area.
Originally a Canal Once Mexico production, “Crónica de Castas” aims to reflect the other face of Mexico City and encourage people to see others as their equals.
“Just as the series stirred deep emotions of many in Mexico, we expect Latinos here in the U.S. will also be moved by its great storytelling, polarizing characters and arresting moments,” said Margie Moreno, NBC Universo’s VP of programming.
NBC Universo, the cable sibling of Telemundo, will make episodes widely available across online, mobile and VOD platforms.
