DriveClub delayed, but PlayStation Worldwide Studios executive Scott Rohde promises the racing game will be "worth the wait." Sony Computer Entertainment

The highly anticipated "Driveclub" racing game for Sony PS4 is delayed once again as PlayStation Worldwide Studios executive Scott Rohde admits the game has "gone back to the drawing board." The open-world racing game was originally a PS4 launch title, but Sony announced earlier that the game will be delayed from October to Spring 2014.

According to Rohde in an interview with IGN, the current form of Driveclub is far from finished. In fact, Rohde admitted that releasing the game now would only do Sony PS4 fans a disservice.

"What I will say is that it all comes back to that fundamental principle, and that's that we want to build great games," Rohde said. "And we really don't want to release a game before it's ready. And sometimes, this happens in the normal course of business, where we think we're on track to deliver what we think is going to be a great game, and when we get closer, we realize that we'd be doing everyone a disservice if we shipped it before it was ready."

"So, I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we're willing to kinda eat that [cost] and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it," said Rohde. "And that's what's going on right now with that game."

When ultimately asked if a 2014 Driveclub release date can be expected, Rohde declined to answer. In addition, a Sony PS4 PR person merely said more details of Driveclub will be announced soon. "We can assure you that it will be worth the wait," adds Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

Earlier this month, the official Driveclub Twitter account allegedly sent out a tweet advising gamers to "mark your calendars" for April 9, 2014. However, the tweet was deleted moments after user 100mph on the PlayStation Nation forums managed to capture a screenshot. We don't know whether April 9 is the Driveclub release date or merely the date of an announcement. Stay tuned as we find more details in the months ahead.
