Fidel Castro, a leader of the Cuban Revolution and its longstanding leader up until 2008, got quite a celebration for his birthday. The 87-year-old got a countrywide celebration, including an exclusive broadcast of a music video dedicated to his legacy. Communist leaders within the country and outside of it openly wished the former leader well on his birthday.

"For you, Fidel, we are proud to occupy front lines of struggles law, culture, science and civilization full of humanity," said the President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega.

Castro's health, however, remains an enigma. He passed down power to his younger brother Raul in 2006 before finally stepping down two years later. He is often seen out of his traditional military uniform, slumped over a cane. One of his most recent public appearances took place back in February where he was voted in as one of the 612 Cuban delegates, despite the fact that he no longer sits in on Parliamentary meetings.

It was commonplace for Castro to celebrate his birthday publically with his children during his time as ruler. He is expected to make an appearance on TV for his birthday. He is the father of eight children, five with first wife Dalia Soto de Valle: Alejandro, Antonio, Alex, Alexis and Angel. He and de Valle were together 50 years. He later married Mirta Diaz-Balart and fathered one son, Fidelito, and adopted two from her previous marriage. Castro was praised on his pervasive sharpness in spite of his poor health.

"Fidel Castro is still bright, always promoter of ideas," said Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, who visited him three weeks ago.

It is no secret that Castro was the source of many controversies during his rule. Even now he is under scrutiny for never speaking publically about the current practices his brothers is employing throughout the country.
