The family of disgraced socialite Ghislaine Maxwell have insisted upon her innocence, and are now using the chaos surrounding the Trump administration's handling of files relating to Jeffrey Epstein to claim she did not receive a fair trial.
Maxwell is currently serving 20 years in prison for crimes she committed with Epstein, her former boyfriend. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump and other senior members of his administration, such as Attorney General Pam Bondi, are facing backlash from MAGA supporters for their unwillingness to release files pertaining to Epstein's case.
Maxwell's siblings have alleged that their sister "did not receive a fair trial," adding that the mishandling of Epstein's case and his ultimate death encouraged prosecutors to to convict her in order to appease the public, according to Fox News.
Furthermore, Maxwell is allegedly willing to "file a writ of habeas corpus" which would "allow her to challenge her imprisonment."
This challenge is "on the basis of new evidence such as government misconduct that would have likely changed the trial's outcome."
Epstein reportedly made an agreement with the Department of Justice in 2007 under which his co-conspirators were protected and could not be prosecuted by the government, an agreement Maxwell's family argue she should be protected by.
In order to secure this agreement, Epstein reportedly "paid fines, paid "victims" millions of dollars and served 13 months in prison."
"I'd be surprised if President Trump knew his lawyers were asking the Supreme Court to let the government break a deal," Maxwell's lawyer David Oscar Marcus said. "He's the ultimate dealmaker — and I'm sure he'd agree that when the United States gives its word, it should keep it."
"With all the talk about who's being prosecuted and who isn't, it's especially unfair that Ghislaine Maxwell remains in prison based on a promise the US government made and broke," he added.
