It can be devastating to young children to learn that their parents are no longer in a mutually loving relationship. But according to a book written by biographer Andrew Morton, that’s exactly what the young Prince William and Prince Harry had to go through when it became known that Prince Charles cheated on their mom, Princess Diana, by having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

In his book “William And Catherine,” Andrew Morton revealed that young princes William and Harry learned about their parents' marital troubles via media reports. It came to the point that William had to confront Princess Diana to confirm some of the unsettling things they learned.

“What concerned them most was the assertion that Prince Charles had been forced into marriage by their grandfather, Prince Philip, and that he had never loved their mother,” Morton wrote. “It was yet another emotionally disorientating and disturbing episode for the two boys to absorb.”

Morton said that it was Princess Diana who had to try to explain things to the worried William and Harry. “On the Morning of October 17, 1994, she met her troubled children in the headmaster’s study at Ludgrove,” the writer wrote.

Eventually, Prince William had to confront Princess Diana, especially regarding the talks he heard. “Is it true, Mother? Is it true that Daddy never loved you?” William reportedly asked his mom.

“She explained that when they had first married she and their father had loved each other as much as they now loved their children,” was the best Diana came up with. However, it’s likely that the bright 12-year-old William did not totally buy into her explanation.

Unfortunately, it all went downhill from there, especially when the media became more involved. Many believe that Diana’s 1995 interview with Martin Bashir, where the princess questioned Charles’ character on television, was the point of no return for their problematic marriage.

As for Prince Charles and Camilla, they did not come out unscathed either. The public basically sided with Princess Diana that Charles and Camilla became two of the most hated personalities for quite some time.

These days, Prince William and Prince Harry eventually accepted the fact that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is now a member of the royal family. Some say that it’s the brothers’ “forgiveness for perceived transgressions” that slowly won back public approval for Prince Charles and Camilla.
