After winning back-to-back AFC titles, and committing 50 turnovers since the beginning of last season, the New York Jets appear to have endured enough of QB Mark Sanchez's turbulence. The team may soon be asking Sanchez to pack his bags. The New York Jets will try to trade Sanchez in the off-season in the hopes of picking up Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, who is "amenable" to coming to the team in 2013, The New York Daily News reported.
According to CBSSports.com's Josh Katzowitz, if Vick is truly interested in playing for the Jets, he's likely favored to win the job, "especially with Rex Ryan reportedly showing 'an affinity' for Vick because he would have a better chance of helping save Ryan's job with a successful 2013."
Things have only gotten progressively worse for the Jets as the season has worn on. Starting QB Mark Sanchez's dismal performance on Monday, losing 14-0 against the Tennessee Titans with five turnovers was bad enough to earn him death threats from fans, the Christian Post reported. The loss also eliminated any hopes the Jets had of making the playoffs.
Sanchez had been a wonder boy in his first two seasons playing for the team, but his performance had crumbled in last two years, throwing 17 interceptions this season alone and posting a career-worst quarterback rating of 67.9.
The news arrives just days after reports emerged that the Jets would start third-string QB Greg McElroy against the San Diego Chargers Sunday over Sanchez and No. 2 QB Tim Tebow. The game will be McElroy's first-ever start for the team after taking over for Sanchez in a narrow 7-6 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
"I don't look at it like anything," McElroy said. "Obviously, it's one game at a time. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, your role changes every day and every minute. You never know what the situation is going to be. ... Just enjoy right now, live in the moment. That's what my Dad said when I talked to him, 'Live in the moment. Enjoy this. You've been dreaming about this your whole life."'
"What a train wreck," an anonymous inside source said of Coach Rex Ryan's decision to the Daily News. "What happened on national television coupled with Rex starting (Greg) McElroy now, there is no happy ending. What is a good exit plan on that? This is a mess."
"I think he's terrible," the source continued. "At the Senior Bowl, if you took your eyes off the field when he was throwing, you might get the ball in your earhole. He's just a good college player."
Tim Tebow looks to have been disheartened by Ryan's decision as well. He is reportedly searching for a way out of the team, or will ask to be traded at the end of the season, the Daily News reported.
"Only in Jets Nation could McElroy, the No. 3 quarterback, who has five completions and 29 yards on his resume, jump over Sanchez, whom the Jets hoped would be their franchise quarterback, and Tim Tebow, who took the Broncos to the playoffs last season and was acquired in a trade just as ridiculous as Sanchez's contract extension," noted the New York Daily News.
