Kate Middleton’s title will change in the near future once Prince William sits on the throne and is crowned king. But the Duchess of Cambridge may follow in the footsteps of Camilla Parker Bowles when it comes to one royal title.

While speaking with People Now, royal expert Imogen Lloyd-Webber said that Kate may refuse the title Princess of Wales because it is so attached to the late Princess Diana. Camilla also refused the same title after she married Prince Charles and opted to go by the title of Duchess of Cornwall instead.

In reality, Camilla is the current Princess of Wales. This is for the simple reason that Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales, and they are legally married to each other.

When the heir to the throne is crowned king, Camilla will be known as Her Majesty the Queen Consort. During this time, Prince William will inherit the title of Prince of Wales, and Kate may be called Princess of Wales. But at the end of the day, the decision on whether she will be called as such is entirely up to the mom of three.

“When William is Prince of Wales, if you met Kate, you’d still call her Your Royal Highness and then ma’am in conversation,” he explained. “Then comes the big one. When William becomes King, Kate will be Queen Consort — at that moment, she is Her Majesty. If you’d met her, she’d be Your Majesty followed by ma’am,” he continued.

Meanwhile, the royal expert said that the use of royal titles may sometimes be confusing, especially if two or more royalties are referred to in the same way. For instance, the late Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II were both referred to as Her Majesty.

“Back in the day when the Queen Mother was still alive, the Queen and the Queen Mother would call each other pretty much every day,” he said. “The phone operator always had a lot of fun connecting them together saying, ‘Your Majesty, Her Majesty, Your Majesty,’ to them. Delightfully confusing, that’s the British Royal Family,” he added. After the Queen Mother’s death, her eldest child became the only member of the royal family who is referred to as Her Majesty.
