Harry Styles officially let the chance to be part of “The Little Mermaid” live-action remake go. He was the top choice for the role of Prince Eric but it is now confirmed that he could not do it.

According to The Wrap, Styles already officially said no to being Halle Bailey's partner in this remake. Bailey is set to play Ariel and while this has caused some controversy, people have already wrapped their minds about it and are excited to know who's set to play Prince Eric. For a while, many thought Styles is a shoo-in and him playing the role is a done deal.

Back in July, it was reported that the singer was already in talks to play the prince who fell in love with a mermaid. However, at the time, talks cannot be finalized because Styles was worried about his schedule and even his suitability for the role. Prince Eric is a well-loved character, after all.

Styles is also thought to be perfect for this version of Prince Eric too because there will be singing involved, unlike in the original 1989 animated film. For the present live remake,  songs from the composers Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be used and some singing will certainly be necessary. Styles can sing, everyone knows that, being a former member of the famous boyband, One Direction.

Currenlty, the roles that are already cast are Ariel and Aunt Ursula. Again, Bailey plays Ariel while Melissa McCarthy will play the iconic antagonist, who will give Ariel feet in exchange for a heavy price. Javier Bardem is reportedly in talks to play King Triton, Ariel’s father. Rob Marshall will be directing this movie.

Fans could not contain their disappointment with the news, especially since they truly believed that Styles playing Prince Eric is a done deal. "Right so going from 'harry styles confirmed to be prince eric' to 'anything is yet to be confirmed" all the way to 'harry styles has denied the role of prince eric' all in a matter of hours has been the worst form of heartbreak i have ever experienced,"one person tweeted.

Fans need not fret. Even if Styles is not set to be Prince Eric, his vocals might soon be heard again. Recently, it was reported that Styles was filming a secret music videoin Mexico, to which his team passed on as him doing a mayo commercial.

“People in the neighbourhood knew filming couldn't just be for a mayo advert, as there would never be so much security or such a large crew,” the source said. “His team had bought hundreds of bouquets of violet and purple flowers for the video. Harry spent most of time filming inside a yellow house,” the source further revealed.

While there are no definite release date and other details yet, “The Little Mermaid” is expected to follow the successes of the recent Disney remake movies, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King.”
