Fans of Meghan Markle were confused when the Duchess did not stand with Queen Elizabeth, Kate Middleton, and Duchess Camilla on Remembrance Day last year. While many believed that Meghan was slighted during the official event, royal experts explained that there was no ill intention regarding her position on the balcony at the time.

As the royal family celebrates Remembrance Day this week, a resurfaced report about Meghan’s experience on Remembrance Day 2018 is now causing some royal followers to revive the controversy. It can be recalled that when Meghan attended the 100th anniversary of Remembrance Sunday last year, she stood by a different balcony, segregated from the rest of the royal family.

While Queen Elizabeth, Kate and Camilla stood on the same platform, Meghan Markle stood on a different balcony alongside the German First Lady, Elke Budenbender, wife of Frank Walter Steinmeier. Meghan’s positioning did not sit well with her fans, who questioned why the Duchess of Sussex had to be separated from the rest of the royal women.

According to royal experts, just because there was a distance between Meghan and the rest of the royal family does not mean the Duchess was slighted. “As the balconies of each window are small, it’s nearly impossible to fit more than three or four women on each—and although Meghan didn’t join her family members, she was given a very important position of her own,” Simon Perry said.

The royal expert also explained that royal protocol plays a huge part in the positioning of royals during official events, as the members of the royal family arrange themselves according to a royal pecking order. For instance, Meghan should always be behind Prince William and Kate because William is the more senior brother than Prince Harry. According to royal protocol, the more senior royal should always be in front or walk first into a room so as to show an order of precedence.

Last month, Meghan Markle talked about her struggles as a member of the royal family and admitted that dealing with the press has been very difficult for her. During the same emotional interview, Prince Harry hinted that there was indeed a rift between him and Prince William.
