Roughly a couple of months after he announced that he was returning to reprise his role as the “Man of Steel,” Henry Cavill announced that his run as “Superman” has come to a close.

Cavill confirmed via his Instagram that he will no longer return as Clark Kent/ Superman for the new DC Universe that is now headed by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it's sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life," he wrote.

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes," his post added.

Hence, it remains to be seen what Gunn and Safran have up their sleeves. There is a new “Superman” film in the works, a sequel to “Man of Steel.”

This got even more attention after Cavill’s cameo appearance on “Black Adam.” And while most were left guessing on what kind of angle or script showrunners would be using, this development dramatically changes everything.

The only thing known is that Gunn will be penning the script. According to CBR, the next “Superman” film will center on the earlier part of the Man of Steel’s life.

As of this writing, no cast or director has been mentioned.

Gunn, however, added, that there remains a chance that Cavill may return to the DCU road.

"[W]e just had a great meeting with Henry and we're big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future," Gunn stated.
