Is this finally the year? Can “America’s Team” get back to the promise land? It’s been over 20 years since Jerry Jones’ boys appeared in the biggest game of the NFL season, but this year is looking more and more optimistic by the week.

Here are five reasons why the Dallas Cowboys could win the NFC this year

1. The Division

So far the Cowboys are 2-1 against NFC East opponents with wins over the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys have easily inserted themselves as the best team in the division, and if they continue to win divisional games, they are guaranteed a top four spot come playoff time. Meanwhile, the Eagles have hit a wall, the Redskins are teetering around .500 and the Giants are still flawed.

2. Weak Conference

This is perhaps the most wide open conference race we have ever seen. There’s no one dominate team that sparks fear. There’s no elite team that stands out above the rest and emerges as the big favorite. The Green Bay Packers are disappointing while the Minnesota Vikings have lost three games in a row. People still aren’t buying into the Atlanta Falcons, but the Seattle Seahawks could be the Cowboys No. 1 threat come January. If there was ever a year for the Cowboys, this is it.

3. Improving Defense

What a sensational job defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has done with his unit. The Cowboys defense won’t be mistaken for the ’85 Chicago Bears, but they are exceeding expectations. The Cowboys rank No. 4 overall in points allowed and No. 6 in rush defense. How many people thought the Cowboys would have a top 10 scoring defense? Sean Lee’s health is the biggest X-factor for the Cowboys defense.

4. Special Rookie Duo

It’s one thing to have a great player in the running for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but two? The Cowboys have two players, Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott, who are in the running to win the award this year. Prescott may even keep his starting role over veteran quarterback Tony Romo. Meanwhile, Elliot is the leading rusher in the NFL. The Cowboys have a bright future with stars leading the way.

5. Offensive Line

There’s no denying it- the Cowboys have by far the best offensive line in the NFC and probably the NFL. Prescott is getting a lot of time to sit back in the pocket to make plays while Elliot is running though huge holes up the middle. The Cowboys have the No. 1 rushing attack in the league thanks to their offensive line, and this front five is causing massive problems for numerous teams.
