On Friday, Dec. 7, LATINO Magazine will present the 2012 NO MAS HAMBRE Summit in Washington, DC at the Capital Hilton.
The event will be free and open to the public and will include community leaders, elected officials, anti-hunger advocates. The day's events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 2:30 p.m.
NO MAS HAMBRE is a nonprofit initiative to raise awareness of hunger in the Latino community.
"Latinos are twice as likely as other Americans to hungry," Alfredo Estrada, editor of LATINO Magazine, said. "Hunger is the greatest challenge facing our community, although many of us simply aren't aware of it. If we want to end hunger, we need to get Latinos actively engaged."
Four panels of experts from the National Latino Children's Institute, the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, USDA, AARP Foundation, National Hispanic Coalition on Aging and others will discuss challenges to reducing food insecurity, childhood nutrition and food insecurity, the role of faith-based organizations and finding solutions through case studies in fighting hunger.
Over 50 million people in the U.S. face hunger each year and Latinos are almost twice as likely to go hungry than other Americans.
Estrada said his disbelief turned to anger when he found out that so many Latinos were facing food insecurity.
"We should have known," Estrada said. "We live in the wealthiest country there ever was, and we have the resources to feed everyone. Many Latinos go hungry because they simply don't know where to find emergency food services or apply for government programs such as SNAP, or food stamps. And many of us who have more than enough to eat simply don't know about the specter of hunger haunting our community."
