Oliver Stone has directed a World Cup TV Ad promoting Direct TV's coverage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The commercial was shot by Rodrigo Prieto on RED EPIC & Movi and features Stone himself as well as soccer stars David Luiz, Sergio Aguero and Radamel Falcao. The short film parodies the filmmaking process: Oliver Stone sits on the touchline as if he were watching a film, while the players and fans are just actors in place to create a cinematic spectacle.
Oliver Stone then pauses filming, calling 'cut': the players and fans turn to the director who calls for more intensity, wanting viewers to feel the tension of each penalty, the pain of each kick. The film shows fans watching all over the world, from India to Japan, USA to Argentina. The ad perfectly captures the intensity and emotion of the World Cup: all eyes of the world, from every country, every religion, turned to the greatest game on earth. "Action" says Stone as the commercial closes.
Also starring in the TV commercial are Luiz, Aguero and Falcao, ensuring Latin American fans in Brazil, Argentina and Colombia will be enticed to watch. DirecTV Latin America will broadcast all of the FIFA World Cup 2014 games live and in HD for subscribers in Latin America. The film's cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto said that the use of EPIC and MoVI allowed for "unusual shots that really are only achievable with this — with a small unit that can go through things, that can change its height. It will really change the way that shooting sometimes happens."
