Boston Celtics forward and future NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce is well known by basketball fans as someone who performs late in games when his team needs him the most.

A consummate pro, Pierce is referred to around the League by his nickname The Truth, a name given to him by Shaquille O'Neil in 2001 after Pierce put on a huge performance in a tough loss to O'Neal's Lakers. While Shaq has often been one to don himself and others with nicknames, Hoopsworld reporter Alex Kennedy notes on his twitter page the 35-year-old Pierce has some creative ability of his own.

Alex Kennedy nails it. That is "pretty cool." Actually, it's awesome. "Prince" Paul Pierce has a great ring to it and it makes total sense because for most of his 15-year career, Prince's father has played like a king in the NBA.

Paul 'The Truth' Pierce played his college ball at the University of Kansas where he averaged over 16 points and 6 rebounds per game. In 1997 and 1998, Pierce was named the Big 12 Conference Tournament MVP, guiding the Jayhawks to consecutive conference titles. Selected 10th overall by the Celtics in the 1998 NBA Draft, Pierce has had a marvelous career.

A 10-time NBA All-Star, Pierce's shining moment as an NBA player came in 2008, when he guided the Celtics to an NBA championship defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in 6 games.

This season, Pierce and the Celtics will be making another trip to the postseason and no one will be surprised if the C's make a deep run in the Eastern Conference playoffs. While young Pierce won't remember this season for the Celtics, you can be sure the game of basketball will be a part of his life in some capacity as he gets older.

After all, he's the heir to king Pierce's throne.
